Picked as a bowler because he could also bat a bit
Useful as a Test bowler only under very limited conditions
Almost an allrounder but not quite good enough at either.
Bit like Moeen Ali

Batsmen should do most of the batting
Runs from bowlers are a bonus.
In having an allrounder the quality of Stokes means England have effectively the advantage of an extra player. Its top order runs (lack of) that is the problem.

Re: England v NZ Test Series
England DID try to address it by playing the likes of M Ali & S Curran (batsman who bowl) but have reverted to playing specialist bowlers who aren't particularly good with the bat.

What by any definition, makes Sam Curran a test batsman? A batting average of under 25 and a top score of 78, certainly don't. Never taken 5 wickets in an innings and his wickets cost 36 each.

Current team has four number 11's including Broad who now plays everything standing on the square leg umpires toes after getting his face rearranged by the Indian Arun.

Really needs addressing. It's been a huge weakness for such a long time and probably the difference in countless tests.

Annoying, but it's top order batting frailty that has cost England a lot more tests, in recent times. Like a 116/6 in this test.

El Scorchio 2:07 Fri Aug 19
Re: England v NZ Test Series
Yet again we've allowed a team's bowlers/tail end to put on 70+ runs. We seem clueless as to how to get these players out, in stark contrast to our own bowlers, who you know will be lucky to make double figures between them most of the time.

Really needs addressing. It's been a huge weakness for such a long time and probably the difference in countless tests.

Why is Stokes wasting the new ball on himself while Jimmy Anderson twiddles his thumbs in the field?

IDEALLY
IF you can have a faster bowler and/or a lefthander as part of your group you cover all bases.

How would a left handed bowler improved the Windies side of the 70's and 80's, or the England side who got to world number 1, in 2012?

If your bowlers are good enough, doesn't matter what their action is.

Who has been the best third seamer in the Broad / Anderson era?
Stokes made the difference yesterday as he is someone who can come in and pound the ball in short.
Potts is a promising bowler but added nothing different yesterday as compared to what Wood or Archer would have.

Westside 11:18 Fri Aug 19
Re: England v NZ Test Series
Broad & Anderson's wickets in Lords Tests and mentioned that McGrath took 26 in 3 Tests at 11 there) was helped by having someone like Brett Lee with him rather than a similar quick.

And the similar paced Broad and Anderson, have taken hundreds of wickets, when bowling as a pair.

Ideally a left hander.

Rubbish. Pick your best bowlers, regardless of type. Didn't notice a left hander, in the Windies 4 pronged pace attack, of the 70's and 80's.

Sven Roeder 11:04 Fri Aug 19
Re: England v NZ Test Series
Ideally its about variety in your fast bowlers not all one pace ... and ideally you might have a left hander.
S Africa seem to have a good group having added the left hander Jansen.

Glenn McGrath (saw they were talking about Broad & Anderson's wickets in Lords Tests and mentioned that McGrath took 26 in 3 Tests at 11 there) was helped by having someone like Brett Lee with him rather than a similar quick.
Wood is a decent bowler but any softer and you could eat him with a spoon.

Westside 10:54 Fri Aug 19
Re: England v NZ Test Series
They are hardly the pace of Wood or Archer though.

They are certainly not.

But if you had a to pick a bowler for your match and had the choice of a fully fit and functioning fast Mark Wood, or a fully fit and functioning trundler Glen McGrath, who would you pick?

Sven Roeder 10:05 Fri Aug 19
Re: England v NZ Test Series

If they can finally get fit and Robinson loses a couple of chins England have a good squad of fast bowling options.

England are still in the game but let it get away a bit with that 7th wicket partnership. As Broad says obviously they need to win Day 3.
SA will be looking for another 50 runs this morning you'd reckon but England have a new ball in 3 overs & need to be batting asap.

Westside 11:54 Thu Aug 18
Re: England v NZ Test Series
Just not enough pace in this attack, but that's nothing new, and not a lot we can do as the quickest bowlers are all injury prone.

Yes, those fast medium trundlers Broad, Stokes and Anderson, have hardly taken any test wickets, in their careers

I bet Ollie Robinson is glad he wasn’t selected, the bowlers are getting pounded by this middle order.

That's a really lucky wicket, but I feel the bowlers did really well before lunch and got absolutely fuck all luck or reward for it.

Crawley's first class average for Kent is 24.5 this season. This when it has mainly been a batting paradise and Kent openers Ben Compton and Daniel Bell-Drummond average 62.5 and 51.8 respectively.

Dominic SIBLEY & Keaton JENNINGS opened in the warm up game where the Lions thrashed S Africa so presumably they are next in line.
